Definition of a Place
A “place” is where geography meets meaning. Place is where lives unfold, stories are made, and communities connect. Through LISA, we translate those connections into data, capturing the pulse of each place by combining spatial precision with the stories and signals that show how people move, visit, and belong.
Examples of a place include:
- Consumer places such as accommodations, restaurants, food & beverage locations, and retail.
- Top attractions include theme parks, national parks, stadiums, arenas, casinos, hotels, museums, national monuments, and resorts.
- Key transportation stops such as airports, rail and water.

Zartico’s LISA (LI Spatial Archive) Improvements and Filtering Logic
- Applied NAICS-based heuristics, significantly improving data quality, reduces manual QA workload (fewer duplicates, naming conflicts, and mergers)
- Move from flat categories to NAICS‑ranked hierarchy to improve consistency and clarity across category-based decisions.
- Ensuring major airports, national/state parks, convention centers, casinos, malls and amusement parks are always included
- Reinstate mall & shopping center footprints classified under commercial lessors for tourism, ensuring we bring in the full footprint vs. broken apart stores with different categories associated.
- Roadway filtering - Use H3‑based filtering to remove POIs inflated by major roads
- Parent–child support - Define tourism-critical child POIs that are allowed to come through (e.g., Zoos in Parks)

Possible Data Shifts in LISA/Z5
- Category Visitation – With 5x the POI coverage and a larger sample size compared to ZDOS, you may notice shifts in visitation distribution across certain categories, particularly accommodations and dining.
- Regional Visitation – Our alignment with U.S. Census tracts enables richer insights into visitation trends. As a result, some shifts in regional visitation distribution may be observed.
- Origin Markets – The new geolocation data normalization balances visitation by origin market, which may highlight different top origin markets. These changes are generally minimal and primarily affect the relative share of the top markets.
- Visitor Definition – The updated definition no longer requires a visitor to remain in your destination for at least two hours. This could also increase the number of observations and could influence the Category, Regional, and Origin Market share of visitation.
