The NHL’s Winter Classic was canceled in October 2021 because of the pandemic. Instead, Lake Tahoe hosted the event on a rink on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort golf course without fans on February 20-21 with safety and responsibility top-of-mind. Lake Tahoe’s commitment to travel responsibly is a testament to how destinations can be creative in building opportunities for transformational efforts to preserve the wellbeing and livelihoods of its community as illustrated by the visitation and positive sentiment on social media.
The main goal of Zartico’s analysis is to understand visitation patterns during the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe – a series of two-regular season National Hockey League (NHL) games, held on the weekend of February 20-21, 2021.
Year-over-year visitation patterns show increases on the south shore of Lake Tahoe where hockey games were held, Route 50, and Kirkwood down south. Visitor volume, measured by device count, increased by 1.7% from Feb 19-22 compared to the previous year.
Out-of-state visitors have a large footprint around the destination with an increase of 37% compared to the prior year as indicated by device count. Top origin markets were Albuquerque-Santa Fe, Phoenix, Austin, and Houston.
