When will the border reopen? Tourists and residents alike would love to know. The Canadian border closed to non-essential travel in March 2020, and re-opening dates keep getting pushed back. In the meantime, Niagara Falls USA, the official Destination Marketing Organization for Niagara County, is making the most of the situation, keeping travelers well-informed, bringing their business community together through their Unified In Safety Commitment, and promoting their greatest asset—natural, open, outdoor spaces. We could all take a page out of their book, it’s no surprise Travel + Leisure just named Niagara Falls one of the best places to travel this September.

Last Summer, in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a spike in August visitation, reaching 57% of 2019 levels. Moreover, the majority of all observed visitors (58%) were from out-of-state. Of all in-state visitors, 41% were from New York, NY, which is quite the road trip. What were these long-distance visitors seeking? Niagara Falls State Park. Between June and August 2020 it was the highest visited attraction. By August, the visitor-to-resident ratio reached 4:7. Like most northeast destinations, the August spike was fairly short-lived and visitation dropped off by October. However, it proved the draw of natural spaces.

We also examined cross-visitation patterns to understand how in-state and out-of-state visitors move around the county. It turns out they have nearly identical patterns, but out-of-state visitors clearly have a larger footprint.

As we prepare for a border opening and immense pent-up travel demand, Zartico will be keeping a close eye on the International Rainbow Bridge, the pedestrian-friendly bridge that connects us with Ontario. Through our operating system we’ll be able to monitor traffic out and, more importantly, in. It’s already an exciting summer and Zartico, along with Niagara Falls USA is excited to see what happens this fall. The iconic Maid of the Mist tour-boat attraction just launched two electric, emission-free boats, and, oh yeah, just announced their first and only female Captain in their 175-year history

Grab a poncho and hangout with Captain Kaitlynn McHenry to get the authentic, natural Niagara Falls USA experience.
